יפן מחדשת את הכניסה ללא ויזה לנוסעים בודדים החל מהיום ה-11 באוקטובר, זאת הכריז ראש הממשלה פומיו קישידה ביום חמישי בניו יורק, בכך הוא מחזיר את תקנות הכניסה של יפן לנורמות טרום-מגיפת הקורונה, לראשונה מזה כשנתיים וחצי. "נסיר את המכסה על מספר האנשים שנכנסים למדינה ונחזור לקבל נסיעות בודדות ונסיעות ללא ויזה", אמר קישידה. נכון לעכשיו יפן מאפשרת סיורים שהם חבילות בלבד ודורשת אשרות מכל המבקרים. הכניסות היומיות הוגבלו ל-50,000. מה שהפך את המדינה ליותר ויותר חריגה, מכיוון שרוב המדינות האחרות נפתחו מחדש לחלוטין לתיירים. החל מהיום, ה-11 באוקטובר, מבקרים לטווח קצר לא יידרשו עוד להגיש בקשה לאשרת תייר. לפני המגיפה, יפן אפשרה נסיעות לטווח קצר ללא ויזה מאנשים מ-68 מדינות ואזורים, כמו סינגפור, מלזיה, תאילנד, הונג קונג וארה"ב. כעת ללא צורך בהזמנת סיורים דרך סוכנויות נסיעות, יהיה קל יותר לְבַקֵר. ממשלת יפן מקווה להגדיל את הכלכלה באמצעות תיירות נכנסת, תוך ניצול מטבע הין החלש. המטבע מרחף סביב שפל של 24 שנים, ונוגע ב-145 לדולר בשלב מסוים, מה שהופך את יפן ליעד אטרקטיבי יותר עבור מטיילים בינלאומיים. לפני המגפה יפן קיבלה שיא של 31.8 מיליון מבקרים בשנת 2019, מה שהפך אותה לאחד היעדים הפופולריים ביותר באסיה. הודות למשאבים התרבותיים ולתשתית שדות התעופה שלה, יפן דורגה במקום הראשון במדד הנסיעות והתיירות האחרון של הפורום הכלכלי העולמי, שפורסם במאי.
